Friday Food Fest: Homemade Burgers

I haven’t done a Friday Food blog in a while and this week, I am in the mood to try some Ostrich and can I have that as a burger please? Yes, I can and so can you! Late last year the food editor of Weg / go!, Aletta Linveldt, wrote a recipe book to celebrate the weekend, food –style and the name? ...  go! Weekend Food. This book is packed full of easy to make recipes for the outdoors, indoors and where ever you want to put some doors over a weekend! I highly recommend this book for your cooking library!

So, you might be wondering about ostrich meat... Here is the skinny ... Quite literally...

In a nutshell

Ostrich meat contains two thirds less fat than beef or pork. It is lean, lower in cholesterol, has less calories and has more iron than beef, lamb, pork and even chicken or turkey. This red meat is in my opinion a super meat! It looks like beef and is so similar in taste, minus the cumbersome qualities of its almost twin.

So ladies and gents... here is my loving contribution to the upkeep of your health, plus the glam of brie, red wine (also good for you in small doses) and berry sauce! Bon Appetit and enjoy the weekend, compliments of go! Weekend Food. Try it for yourself, don't take my word for it!

Ostrich burger with brie

Serves 4

400 g minced ostrich
200 g fatty minced beef
¼ teaspoon ground lemon pepper
2 tablespoons soy sauce
¼ cup red wine
100 g of Brie cheese
1 tablespoon of berry sauce

Combine 400 g minced ostrich with 200 g fatty minced beef. Season with ¼ teaspoon ground
lemon pepper, 2 tablespoons soy sauce and ¼ cup red wine. Knead well and divide into 4 balls.
Cut the skin off 100 g of Brie cheese (or use goat’s cheese) and divide the cheese into 4 balls. Wrap
a ball of cheese in a ball of mince – make sure the cheese is completely covered by the meat – and
shape into a fl at patty. Refrigerate until fi rm. Braai the patties for 3 minutes on each side, basting with braai sauce throughout. Be careful not to overcook the patties – ostrich meat has more fl avour when partially cooked. Also remember that the patties have cheese in the middle, so they will cook much quicker. Spread 1 tablespoon of berry sauce (like cranberry) over each patty and serve with rocket leaves on a slice of bread.

Tips: For best results, place the raw patties in the freezer for 20 minutes. Rub with olive oil and braai over hot coals or fry them in a very hot pan. For a winning braai sauce, mix equal amounts of tomato sauce, soy sauce and honey. For a juicy burger, braai the patties until halfway cooked and finish in the oven.

BodyLove: Dove holds up a mirror

There is nothing like the combination of a cold, pre-mensies hormones and bad wardrobe choice to make me feel like The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Oh and to top it all off, bumping into my ex for the first time after years, just to put me over the edge. (I am just throwing that in there for dramatic effect because that is how I feel. It was a pleasant encounter.) So feeling like a train wreck was nothing short of what I expected for the day. Ladies, hormones are ugly little liars. They make you feel like a version of yourself that you want to strangle or hug or bite or slap and sometimes you feel these emotions all at once! Basically I felt like this... Thank goodness, I was not in an interview like poor Jess...

Point is ... Being a woman is tough! Whether you are hormonal or down on yourself or just not feeling your perky self... It is important to remember that you are beautiful. We forget! I forget and Dove found a way to hold a gentle mirror up to all women.

A friend of mine sent me this video clip and it struck a chord with me. I got the message, LOUD AND CLEAR.... I had a genuine Puppy-in-a-cup-moment but this is why!

Dove, I salute you. You have outdone yourself with this advert and you will affect women of all shapes and sizes, races, cultures... This is the best ad ever. #StandingOvasion #Bravo #Encore #iBodyLoveIt

Blast from the past! Kom ons Kuier!

Okay, so technically the O Magazine shoot was not my first shoot for a magazine... It was in the Kuier magazine in 2010. You can hardly tell that the photo shoot was on a hot summers day and that I was sweating the smile right off my face.

BodyLove: O Magazine Style

Myself and the O-Mazing team!
Last Friday was an extraordinary day for me. Every little girl dreams of the spotlight at some point in her life. Whether it is a chance to be on TV, walking down the aisle, being a princess or a model... You have a little dream… You know I am telling the honest truth here… Well I had the teeniest taste of being a model.

I woke up at the crack of dawn (just like a model) and had a tiny breakfast (probably like a model – because I was too nervous to really eat). I put on my denim shirt and tights and seriously nailed the blank canvas look. I swear when the makeup artist saw me, she probably thought this girl a has potential… May the latter only exist in a dark place I refuse to go to. LOL

Anyway, with Google Map in hand and a head start to the day… I made my way to Wembley Studios in Cape Town. At this point I felt like I was going to do a ‘Go See’ like the girls do in America’s Next Top Model. Only, this wasn’t America’s Next Top Model, it was Cape Town without any yellow cabs / taxi’s and I was one of three ladies selected to be part of the O Magazine Real Woman shoot.

Just like the name suggests, the O Real Woman is a woman who is an ordinary woman. She isn’t the classic model type. This is where the Mishtery sees herself, as a perfectly normal ordinary young woman with curves, without model-like height but definitely representative of the majority of women in Cape Town.

Back to the day in the life of the SA’s Next Plus Size Model… For the day… My makeup was a combination of Bobbi Brown and Mac makeup. The makeup artist asked me if I was opposed to wearing fake eyelashes and I said, only if my eyelids gets stuck together. haha! I felt a little like Zoey Deschanel with those long beautiful lashes! My makeup was soft pastels to match the outfit. I was dressed in Forever New clothes, Aldo shoes, Louis Vuitton clutch bag and Accessorize neckpiece.

The shoot went well, I'd say. It took me a while to get used to the lashes... My eyes felt so heavy lol. Everytime the photographer asked me to smile, I was thinking... Are my eyes open wide enough? I don't know how real models do this on a daily basis but I have the world's respect for what they do. For sure!

So, in July the O Mag with the SA's Next Plus Size Model will be on the shelf!

Thank you Leila, O's Fashion editor and Raaziqa, her assistant, for your patience with me and my elusive smile and for making sure I look like a star!

Mishtery
